Question: As i was revisiting the Onsen 2 batsu yesterday, there's a part where Matsumoto visits the guys to harass them of course, and he shows them 3 drivers licenses of comedians. They laugh at the fact that all 3 had "gold cards" or were "gold members". What exactly does the "gold" on a drivers license reference in Japan?

ReplyDeleteEzogohul- I haven't watched that particular episode that you're talking about. But I believe you are awarded with a "gold" designation on driver's license once you pass the five year mark without any kind of auto/traffic offense in Japan.

ReplyDeletedo you guys have the one where Hamada, Yamasaki, Tanaka, and Endo have to help Matsumoto fulfill his sports goals; i saw a preview of it, Matsumoto would be standing up but when they would start the sporting event: swimming, skateboarding, weightlifting, etc: he would go limp, making it hard as hell for the others to help him reach his goal?

ReplyDeleteAnonymous- The whole Matsumoto sports challenge series isn't subbed. Black Gaki had subbed the High Jump, Skateboarding and Rick James Hypnotism and had them on his blog, but sadly those videos have been deleted and i don't believe were ever reposted.

ReplyDeleteI had a question about the "desu" and general "su" pronunciation that you talked about. In my japanese learing at school, I have always been taught to drop the "u" sound, and just say 'des' and, for example, "suki" as "ski". but when I went to japan for an intensive language program, my japanese teacher always said "de-su" and "su-ki", which was really throwing me off. She was native japanese, so I was confused. any thoughts on that?
Also, I thought I would say I was in Osaka/kansai when I went to japan, and the first thing my host family had me try was nato. So there are some more kansai people who like nato, haha XD

ReplyDeleteAs for pronouncing "desu." I can imagine a Japanese teacher would enunciate the end "u" since she is to speak proper. Our feeling is that most people would drop the ending "u" especially on casual conversations.
But no, I would still not enjoy eating Natto.
yeah, I think pronouncing the "u" sound in desu is to do with politeness, in formal situations you're supposed to pronounce it more strongly, it can also be used for emphasis...there's also a similar thing with "Ga" which makes it sound more like a nasal "nga" which I kinda hate :P
