Gaki No Tsukai - No Laughing Police

(Police Last one!!) THANK YOU, EVERYONE!!

Back in January 2009, I thought I'd delve myself into the world of blogging where I can discuss about sports, music, and just a little sprinkles of Japanese culture :)

Fast forward to today, I have 50 mainly Gaki video clips translated and 71 followers and anonymous followers. I'd never imagined I'd last this long, or still have visitors.

I hope you got to learn something about Japanese culture through this blog as I re-learned about it myself.

I'd like to thank my beautiful and awesome wife again for proofreading/editing my translation.

And of course thank you to all who's stuck through.

As I did with the Hospital series, I will merge all of the sub files together and make it available in a future.

It's hard to tell what I'm doing blogging-wise from now on, but there are several Downtown videos that I've been meaning to sub, so I might tackle them first.

(Police 16) Cheers!

Japanese love to drink. I'm not saying all the other nationalities don't. I'm just saying the "drinking" is very much a part of Japanese culture. They love it so much that most, if not all, of the workforces customarily would get together at the end of the year called 　Bou-Nen-Kai (忘年会 roughly translates to "Let's forget about all the shitty things happen this year by drinking until the majority of us are ready to go streaking into the city.) and because that's not enough, at the beginning of the year, they'd have Shin-Nen-Kai (新年会　roughly translates to "Let's prepare us for the shitty year ahead by drinking until we're streaking in the city where we'd just streaked not so long ago.) Awesome.

But on the serious note, the Japanese officials have recently toughened up the law on drunk driving where if you're caught drunk driving, you can be fined up to approx. $10,000USD or be imprisoned for maximum of 5 years. And I believe this applies to all the passengers in the vehicle, not just the driver(Imprisonment with hard labor not exceeding 3 years or a fine not exceeding approx.$5,000USD for DUI; 2 years imprisonment, approx.$3,000USD fine for DWI.) Wow.

My recent visit to Japan was such an eye opener in this respect. I saw none of my friends drive drunk. There'd always be a designated driver, or we'd utilize public transportation, or utilize this service called the "Daiko" where you can hire a driver who would drive you, your company, and your car back to your destination. The cost of this service is almost equivalent to the taxi cab service.

(Police 15) Oh no, it's her again

For those familiar with the "Don't laugh at the Hospital," this brutal doctor appears in this clip needs no introduction. But here's a little about her.

I believe she's recently gotten married. And so far, she has not beaten him with slippers yet.

Speaking of slippers, I had forgotten how much Japanese are into slippers. They're everywhere!!!!!!!!!! You'd walk into any body's house, and you'd customarily take your shoes off. Then your host would offer you a pair of slippers to walk around the house. You feel the nature's call and excuse yourself to the bathroom, and find that there's another pair of slippers inside the bathroom. I ponder, "Now, Do I take off the pair I already have on and use this new pair specifically meant to be used only for this bathroom?"

(Police 13) Shiritori

Shiritori is a well-known word game played in Japan.
You would need at least two people to play this game.
First player would start by blurting out a word (only nouns.)
Next player will have to keep the game alive by blurting out another word which starts with the same KANA (or alphabet)which was used to end the word the preceding player used. Let's see an example:

とり--->りんご


First word is read "tori" means "bird" and the second word is read "ringo" meaning an "apple." As you can see, the second player has to use the word that starts with Japanese Kana "り"

(Police 12) I was going to write

about funeral practices in Japan. But that's a major buzz-kill. Besides, this clip morbidly coincides with the tragedy of an actor/comedian Itsuji Itao, who in this clip, plays a dead person. RIP Itao's daughter.

Let's discuss how to eat ramen noodles properly. First of all, I grew up slurping the hell out of ramen noodles thus, I have zero issues. But there's still some around me in the States who has issues with it. I guess it sounds gross or something.

The ramen noodles are not considered a gourmet meal, but rather, meant for people to eat it quick and go about their business. Not only that, you want to consume ramen noodles before they get soggy in a hot broth. I would say the gross-ness factor of soggy noodles is equivalent to the skunked beer.

Um, here's a movie (went straight to DVD) starring Brittany Murphy about a girl going to Tokyo to learn how to cook ramen.....

(Police 11) Some guys just won't go away

If you've seen the Hospital Batsu Game Series, you'd remember this actor named, Tatsuo Umemiya, who appears at the very beginning(of hospital series) screaming "Claudia!" as his wife gets wheeled into the hospital. Well, he was a big time actor back in the 60's into the 70's, mainly playing the bad-ass yakuza type of roles in the majority of Japanese films. And I mean lots of films. I counted about 80 films this man was involved in that time era.

And we have this comedian Shoji Murakami who has been kind of known as the "one hit punchline" jokester who, apparently, is still punching with the same/similar jokes for the past 25 years. In this clip, he stays away from his usual one-liners, yet, if you're not familiar with his style, it's hard to make him funny in an English language.
One sad note, Itsuji Itao's daughter suddenly died earlier this week. I believe she was very young(like 1 or 2 year old young.) RIP

(Police 10) I know English is cool and everything but

As I subbed/translated this clip (half way by the way,) I couldn't help but notice that there's been way too many English words and phrases that Japanese never bother to translate it in their own language: Japanese.
The word D.V. comes up in this clip. It stands for Domestic Violence. Now, the last time I checked there was Japanese phrase that means exactly that 家庭内暴力(reads: Katei Nai Bouryoku)What the hell happened to it? Is it because it's easier to say D.V. than 家庭内暴力?

I understand that many of the IT related words are pretty much left in English for the convenience, but I've recently heard some words that I know that they have it in Japanese like; reasonable, cost, moral, consultant, restructure, status, and etc...there's way more.
Use Japanese and be proud!

Now, I'm going to cause some 家庭内暴力 (jk)

(Police 09) Perseverance

Sometimes, it takes three decades to get your break in the entertainment business. 30 freakin' years~!
That is exactly how long it took for this Manzai duo, Uehara Haruka and Kanata.
To be honest, I don't know how they're doing now since this batsu game series is about 3 years old? I understand that the Haruka, who appears in this clip, had a role in the Matsumoto's directorial debut film "Dai Nihon Jin" or "Big Man Japan(US release)"
I always enjoyed Itsuji Itao's humor ever since the late 80's. He has this weird off-beat awkwardness to him that was always intriguing. He gazes at you with that blank stare, ever soliciting your smile or laughter. Matsumoto actually believes in him so much that back in 1994 when Itsuji got into trouble with the law (he had sex with a minor)and he went MIA, Matsumoto petitioned to have Itsuji come back on TV. And I believe Itsuji did come back after a year or so. His employment from Yoshimoto Co. was also saved based on the investigation which revealed that the girl had insisted that she was 18 years old and their affair was under mutual consent.By the way, this Indian girl in a clip is not Itsuji's wife in real life. Her name is Sherry. Just so you know...

(Police 08) Thanks Mom! for the Bento

Bento is definitely an integral part of Japanese culture.
You can purchase different style of Bento called the "Eki Ben"(literally means meals at the station) at most of the larger train stations. And each station would usually have their specialty bento box. I did a little research and holy crap, there's hundreds of different kinds of bento boxes throughout Japan.

When I was attending the middle-school in Osaka, my Mom would get up every morning to prepare bento boxes for me and my brother. And this is not slapping some lunch meat between two slices of bread, folks. She'd have to cook rice, fry this, fry that, and had to actually cook a set of meals so that I can huff it down in like 5 minutes, choke a bit, then wash it down with tea so that I can go outside to kick ass in the afternoon dodge ball session.

Bento is also readily available at all the convenience stores in Japan. By the way, convenience stores are ubiquitous in Japan is an understatement times 2. Convenience store (or konbini) is like Starbucks in the States. Almost in every other corner, you'd see either 7 Eleven, or ever-so-popular Lawson.

(Police 07) Are you in trouble? Just ask Doraemon for the help

First off, thank you all for your patience. I understand it's been a while since my last post (relatively speaking.) Sometimes things happen and subbing has to take a backseat for a bit. But I'm back and running again, so fear not all the fans.

This clip was difficult to translate in that I just couldn't make this guy, who appears towards the end of the clip, funny. Anyhow, at one instance he yells "If you don't understand Japanese, go ask Doraemon for some help" Well, this is not quite what he says in Japanese, but more precisely he says "You don't understand Japanese? Then eat Honyaku Kojac" I know it's a mouthful to even pronouce these words. "Honyaku" means to translate and "Kojac" is this jelly thingy that Japanese like to eat (me included)Please refer to

Ok, so this Honyaku Kojac is one of many magical tools Doraemon used to help his earthling friend/roommate in many episodes of this super famous Japanese cartoon called, well, "Doraemon."

In 1924, Hachikō was brought to Tokyo by his owner, Hidesaburō Ueno, a professor in the agriculture department at the University of Tokyo. During his owner's life Hachikō saw him off from the front door and greeted him at the end of the day at the nearby Shibuya Station. The pair continued their daily routine until May 1925, when Professor Ueno didn't return on the usual train one evening. The professor had suffered a stroke at the university that day. He died and never returned to the train station where his friend was waiting.

Hachikō was given away after his master's death, but he routinely escaped, showing up again and again at his old home. After time, Hachikō apparently realized that Professor Ueno no longer lived at the house. So he went to look for his master at the train station where he had accompanied him so many times before. Each day, Hachikō waited for Professor Ueno to return. And each day he didn't see his friend among the commuters at the station.

The permanent fixture at the train station that was Hachikō attracted the attention of other commuters. Many of the people who frequented the Shibuya train station had seen Hachikō and Professor Ueno together each day. They brought Hachikō treats and food to nourish him during his wait.

This continued for 10 years, with Hachikō appearing only in the evening time, precisely when the train was due at the station.

(Police 06) This is what I call a real service

When I was living in Japan way back when, there was no such thing as the "Self-Service" gas station. I guess the time has changed because I heard they're everywhere in Japan now. Such a shame.

Who wouldn't want to feel welcomed when you pull into the gas station and be greeted by at least 2 or 3 uniformed employees. They usually come running at your car. Cheerful(almost loud) employees, I might add.
One of them will pump the gas while another employee would wipe your windshield(and you don't have to tip them either!), and if there's one extra hand, he/she will clean out your ashtray. And I mean CLEAN as in dump out the cigarette butts, and wipe the inside of the astray clean.
But wait, what's the coolest part of going to the full-service gas station? It's to witness the gas station employee's ability to stop the "ever-so-congested" traffic flow in Japanese roadways. He/She can step out into the middle of the road, regardless of how many cars are whipping by, and signal you that it's safe to pull out into the roadway. How cool is that?

One side note. Yes the "Zet!" is back.

(Police 05) Bosozoku

I've roughly translated the word "Bosozoku" as "Speeding Gangs" in this clip.
This Bosozoku usually comes alive at night. It's a gang of usually kids (16 - 25 yo) riding recklessly around the city/town in their modified bikes or cars. Many of them would have modified exhaust pipe which creates trumpet-like sound. Nice.

Many of us have seen a movie like "Fast and the Furious" (or was it "fast and furious?) where they'd have these cool modified cars. Well, not every one's that fortunate.

Yep, this mod is perfect for scooping up some poop from the litter box.

(Police 04) Kinpira Gobo Recipe

Ingredients:
*1/2 lb gobo (burdock root)
*1/4 lb carrot
*1 tbsp soysauce
*1 tbsp sugar
*1 1/2 tbsp mirin
*1/2 tbsp sake
*1 tsp sesame seeds
*2 tsps vegetable oil

Soak these gobo until they're nice and soft. I would say it could potentially take a day, I mean C'mon, they're roots after all. So plan ahead. If you wanted to eat this tonight, sorry, but go grab you some McChicken.

Once soft enough, shave the gobo skins and cut these suckers (as well as carrots) to your preferred shape. Shape of Shuriken would make a nice dinner conversational piece with your loved ones.

Using vegetable oil, fry these gobo strip suckers in a pan, throw in the carrots and seasonings (except the sesame seeds)and stir fry them like no tomorrow.

At your discretion, turn off the heat, sprinkle some sesame seeds and you're ready to chow with a bowl of rice and other stuff you could potentially have prepared while the gobos are being soaked in water.

(Police 02) Bark at the Sun

This TV show called "Taiyo Ni Hoero"(Bark at the Sun) told stories of each of 7 detectives throughout the season. Of course, there needed to be bad guys to have a story, but who cares about them, right? We wanted to know more about these good righteous detectives every week.

The Boss, that's depicted by Yutaro in this clip, never left the police station. He just gave orders every week. It was always 6 other detectives who did all the physical work. Speaking of physical, before Tom Cruise started to run in every single films he did, these 6 Japanese detectives were doing just that back in late 70's into the 80's. According to one mathematician, one of the detectives actually ran half the earths' circumference in one season

(Police 01) C'mon, Hollywood, this is THE superhero!

Move over Batman and Iron Man and the likes, because here comes the Sukeban Deka!
You Ameri-heros spend millions and millions of dollars on your nuclear-missile-proof costumes and state-of-the-art weapons to save lives. Well let me tell you, here in Japan, all it'd cost you is the small change in Yen for the metal yo-yo and the schoolgirl who's willing to wear a metal mask for the 10 years of her adolescent life to conceal her identity!!(Now, all the smarty pants, don't be wondering if wearing this metal mask to-from-in school can attract more attention. Remember there was no Twitter back then.)

Man, I used to watch this show without questioning anything about its elements. I was young then I guess. Worse yet, I remember wanting this metal yo-yo(see photo for the inner police badge hidden inside) really bad so that I can split my brother's jaw in half.
