GIVEAWAY : Lincoln #1 DVD and No Laughing Hospital DVD

As some of you may know, I'm moving back to Japan in few weeks.
And while cleaning out my apartment, I came across two DVD's that I'd like to say sayonara to.

  • Lincoln #1 - 2 disc set with 8 episodes
  • Gaki No Tsukai - No Laughing Hospital DVD

All you have to do to win them is tell me why you're.... No, you don't need to do that.
Just leave a number between 1 and 100 in the comment section, preferably not as anonymous, and please leave me your Twitter or Facebook account so that I can contact you directly.

I'll use Random Number Generator to pick a number in few days.

Good luck,

p.s. Please let other fans know, too. Thanks.

(Hospital Sub Files) As promised, here's the sub files

Phew!
The process took way longer than I anticipated.
But here it is.

They are both in .ass file format. And I would kindly ask you not to convert it to .srt format.

Any feedback will be appreciated.

(Hospital Last One) A Big Thank You!!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank my agent who stuck by me through thick and thin...

All kidding aside, I'd like to thank my wife for proofreading, editing and correcting not-often-correct grammars within my translations.
It was a long but rewarding 4-months translation/subbing marathon to say the least.

And thanks to everyone who has responded, commented, questioned, argued, counter argued, criticized, yelled, screamed, pleaded, babbled, vented, and applauded on this blog. They became the great motivator for me to finish strong. What am I, a sports athlete?

With that said, I thought I would answer some of the more frequently asked questions:

Q: Are you going to upload the vids on rapidshare and such?
A: Not the video, but perhaps a sub file.

Q: Will you send me a .srt or .ssa file?
A: Instead of sending it to each one of you, I will upload the sub file somewhere once I get all the files merged into one. It'll most likely be in .ssa format though.

Q: Will you sub the Police Batsu Game?
A: One of the comments left the other day pointed out that there's a group already working on it. I'll see if they can use my help.

Q: Will you sub a video if I send you one?
A: I can't gurantee anything, but feel free to send or direct me to where I can find this video.

Thank you again, everyone!!

(Hospital 23) Yikes! U-tube's pulling out some vids!

So, I came home a couple of days ago from vacation to find out that some of the videos have been pulled out. Bummer.
I was hoping to have all the videos up before that happens. Oh well.

I have about 15 minutes of footage left.

As always, thanks for all the support!

(Hospital 21) The timing of this clip is almost scary!

You get to see the rare footage of Matsumoto and Hamada being by themselves. I understand there is question of whether they get along or not outside their work place. After watching and subbing this clip, my half-ass conclusion is that they share mutual respects. They don't go out drinking together anymore, but rather respect each other's space. I have to say I was a little surprised to hear this weird tone in Matsumoto's voice and phrasing as he talks to Hamada. I wish I could translated this clearer in English.

(Hospital 20) I miss Baumkuchen!!

Damn! Where can I get Baumkuchen around here in the States??
For those of you don't know, forgive me for being lazy, here's excerpt from Wikipedia:

Known as the "King of Cakes,"[1] the Baumkuchen is a kind of layered cake, known in many countries throughout Europe. When cut, the cake reveals the characteristic golden rings that give it its German name, Baumkuchen, which literally translates to "tree cake". To get the ring effect, a thin layer of batter is brushed evenly onto a spit and allowed to bake until golden, after which the process is repeated.

(Hospital 19) I take it back, you CAN have everything in your life (well, almost)

This woman Ayako Nishikawa, who plays the doctor in this clip, is an actual doctor in real life. She juggles between being an actress and doctor. She was a "Miss Japan" back in the 90's. Life's not fair sometimes I know.

(Hospital 18) You just can't have everything in your life

And there are occurrences where a man or woman inherit so much talent/aptitude in one area that the negligence shows in other areas. Such, I believe, is the case for this man, Jimmy Onishi. Here's a man (supposedly) so dumb, back when he was playing high school baseball, even with his great ball skills, was not allowed to play because he just couldn't remember the simple hand signs given by coaches. Or, when he was offered to become one celebrity's designated driver, it took him nearly 6 months to obtain a license at the driving school where average drivers were passing the test in mere 2 weeks.

Then, in early 90's, at one TV show, Jimmy entered some charity event where him and other celebrities were to auction off their hand crafted arts. Nobody had any idea what's to come of Jimmy (I'm sure he had no idea either)then. But Jimmy's color painting ended up receiving such high regards by actual art critics that Jimmy turned his career into an artist since.

He's since released book of painting collections, held exhibits throughout Japan, and released many merchandises of his own.

Recently, he's been doing more TV shows, but I believe his main focus is still on his painting and sculpting.

(Hospital 17) I love me some Nabe!!

Alright so this guy in the beginning...
I guess he's like Ron Jeremy in the States? I'll leave it at that.

Watching these guys delve into the Nabe(clay pot) made me super hungry and missed having that with my friends in Japan. What's cool about Nabe is you can pretty much throw in anything (Well Ok, maybe not pizza, but you know?) You throw vegetables, meats, poultry, and/or seafood in and watch it cook while talk and drink with your friends/family. When they look done(very subjective,) everyone goes fishing with their chopsticks. If you're clinging to the notion of "No Double-Dipping," you'd be left starving.

(Hospital 16) Thai anyone?

When I started to translate / sub this clip, I thought this guy, Heipo, was just some asshole comedian. Upon a little research here's what I found about Heipo;
*He owns an entertainment production company
*According to Matsumoto, Heipo is "super" wealthy. His income is easily more than that of chief producer of Gaki No Tuskai series.
*He has appeared on many of "Gaki No Tsukai" TV shows.

I guess this guy's M.O. is to be as blatantly rude as possible which, seems to work for some people. Just not my cup of tea.

Yes, the tall pregnant woman is indeed a man named Shiro Kishibe. He was in the band called "The Tigers" back in 60's. I'm sure you can figure out which one is him on the photo. As I understand it, they were very popular (like Joanna Brothers.)

The surgeon who yells "Zet!" repeatedly is Ichiro Mizuki. He sang many many opening credit songs for Japanese anime shows such as "Mazinger Z"(aka Tranzor Z.) The alphabet "Z" is often pronounced "Zet" in Japan. And I believe that's where him yelling "Zet !" comes from. Please someone confirm or correct me on this.

You gotta give credit to the Urine Guy for not busting out laughing doing what he does. (I believe he's a very established actor in Japan.)

Hope you enjoyed it.

(Hospital 13) Hail the Great Osamu Tezuka

Mr. Tezuka's most famous work must be the "Astro Boy." But his other work, which is depicted by Itao in this clip, is the "Black Jack," which to me, is one of his most daring and profound mangas ever to surface in late 70's into the 80's.

I remember reading "Black Jack" manga, and being lost because young soul like me (back then) would have no idea what the heck is going on with many of the medical technicalities explained in manga. And it was pretty much impossible for me to fathom the fact that Black Jack's assistant Pinoko, used to be one of Black Jack's patients' tumor brought back to life. WTF?

Mr. Tezuka has passed away some time ago, and there's a museum dedicated to him in the city of Takarazuka which is not far from where I grew up.

So I'm finally half way into this madness, the batsu game.
One more disk to go...

Last 5 minutes of the clip is basically a preview/commercial/promo for other Downtown videos. I'm starting to miss their manzai a bit.

(Hospital 11) Yes, they're merely taking an oath

I know this might look funny, but this "taking an oath" takes place a lot in Japan. Almost at the beginning of any sporting events, one or two participants will swear to abide by the sportsmanlike conduct throughout an event.
Having one of the arms extended like this might resemble a certain European historic figure(around WWII) but as far as I know, there's no connection between the two.

(Hospital 10) Scary Horror Manga

One of the rescue members in this clip is Mr. Kazuo Umezu. I admit I had to look him up, but as soon as I found out who he was, my memory came back as a child being freaked out by this man's "manga," or comic book. Is there another word for comic book without the word "comic?" Because there's nothing comical about this man's cartoon characters and their stories. They're just eerie and scary. It must have left profound impression on me because I started to get into the "horror" not long after that.
If you are into this genre of manga, please feel free to google him. I'm sure you can even buy many of his classics from the 70's into the 80's.

(Hospital 09) Kameda Family

I have only heard about them through Japanese internet news, but this father and son duo are notoriously rude inside and outside the boxing ring.
When the sportsmanship is heavily emphasized in Japanese culture, it is almost refreshing to see/know that they exist. And we all love to hate the bad guys, don't we?

(Hospital 08) Mr. Kinpachi and To KAKI or not to KAKI

This long haired man who is impersonated in this clip is known as the "Kinpachi sensei." Mr.Kinpachi is the MacGyver of the social issues in Japanese high school. This sensei (teacher) can solve anything from bullying, teen-pregnancy, teen violence, and teen suicide usually in one episode (approx. 30-45min.)This character is obviously fictional but I always felt like every school had one of these passionate and super righteous teachers who went above and beyond their role..

If you saw the clip, then you already know. But the Japanese word "KAKI" means both persimmon and an oyster, thus the confusion between Matsumoto and Yamasaki
