This interview was conducted more than a decade ago. But it gives us a little glimpse into the mind of Hitoshi Matsumoto of Downtown. Just a quick warning, there's no funny stuff in this clip.
*"Gottsu Ee Kanji" was a popular skits show that Matsumoto was involved in early 90's. When Matsumoto says, "An incident of Gottsu Ee Kanji," he means of how his relationship with Fuji television, who used to air an aforementioned show, has turned sour after the Fuji television decided to air a baseball play-off game over "Gottsu Ee Kanji-Special Edition" that Matsumoto was obviously heavily involved in. It is said that the Matsumoto was not notified of their decision until the very last minute, and that pissed him off enough to boycott to appear on Fuji-related shows afterward.
Hope you enjoy it.

Thanks alot Shibata
ReplyDeletenow i understand why matsumoto is how he is
This vid was in youtube without any subs, and a lot of people begged for any kind of subs. Now shibata has made our dreams come true :D thx for this one!! :D
ReplyDeleteI Requested this in gakinotsukai forums lol and now im watching it again
DeleteThanks for the sub+video. Never knew about the stuff he was dealing with. Pretty crazy, I feel for him though. He definitely is a unique comedian, much more interesting than most of the other ones that I have seen.
ReplyDeleteStrange when you get to see the inner life of comedians. Some of the funniest guys I've watched over the years have been some of the most deeply unhappy when they get home (I'm not saying Matsumoto is, but I wouldn't be surprised if he was).
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking really of the great English comedians, like Kenneth Williams, Tony Hancock, Benny Hill, Tommy Cooper, etc. Maybe dedicating your life to making others laugh robs you of something?
Anyway, I'm ranting. :P Haven't seen the other parts yet, I look forward to them.
Thanks so much for the subs, I have searched on youtube so many times to find someone who would sub it, and you finally did!! Much love shibatabread <3
ReplyDeletethat was "refreshing" in a way in my opinion
ReplyDeletety for subbing that
matsumoto is my fave lol
-bumper
wow this is a totally different version of Matsumoto than the one i'm use to seeing. very very interesting documentary.
ReplyDeleteWow, I am actually a big fan of the "Gottsu ee Kanji"-series and reading about this "incident" shocks me a little bit. I completely understand Matsumoto's anger about that - you actually feel how much love & passion Matsumoto (of course the whole team, but him included) put into those skits. I'm sure they wouldn't have done this show forever, but the show definitively deserved a better end.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for subbing this! Matsumoto is such an interesting person, so I am glad to be able to understand him better now.
Thank you so much for subbing this. You don't know for how long I've wanted to watch this.
ReplyDeleteThank's for the video, i'm a brazilian and now i can see and understand about everything in these videos.
ReplyDeleteKeep going doing the translations please.
Thank you very much, this was really interesting
ReplyDeleteWait, was Matsumoto in Gottsu before he partnered with Hamada in Downtown?
ReplyDeleteTo the guy above me: Gaki no Tsukai existed before Gottsu Ee Kanji. Even Before Gaki no Tsukai, Downtown existed for about 7 years, albeit Gaki no Tsukai was probably the launching pad for their careers.
ReplyDeletecan u please upload no laughing Newspaper agency? youtube deleted all of the videos...
ReplyDeletecan u please upload at veoh?
He seems pretty deep. Very interesting, hope to see more from this documentary. Can you tell us more about that book? What was it about? Autobio? Was it funny? Serious?
ReplyDeleteThanks for the video Shibata, Matsumoto being my favourite among the 5 it was really interesting to learn more about him and his life.
ReplyDeleteBut i didn't thought of him as being like the sad type of guy, it surprised me bit seeing the video...
Anyways thanks for all this
i love matsumoto! he's my favorite among gaki members, thank you for this shibata! =)
ReplyDeleteWow Thanks, finally! Can you please do the second part :D?
ReplyDeleteSome people may of suggest that he is trying too much. A lot of people think that the funny ones just want attention. But that is not true at all... We been just thought that by teacher and our parents. But in real, some people making jokes just want others to enjoy it the most and that is all they need to make their life happier. To fallow what they good at, for no one to make them down on their dream till the end.
ReplyDeleteI think this matches Matsumoto...
whats the song that starts at around 2.00? plz someone help me finding it. its beautiful D:
ReplyDeletei guess part of the song is Samuel Barber - Adagio for Strings
ReplyDeleteThanks for subbing that video... hitoshi matsumoto is such a great person... but about the video... that is just the half... i have both parts on my computer... do you think is there a way i can give the videos to you.. so you can complete the translation? my mail is edy_mg17@hotmail.com
ReplyDeleteHi ShibataBread, I was wondering if you are ever planning to re-upload the second part of the documentary? I keep coming back here every so often hoping for some information about the rest of the video. If you don't plan to re-upload it then tell us so (update the post with a note etc). Thanks for all the work on translations.
ReplyDeleteAs japanese,90s baseball playoff in japan is like superbowl in US. But matsumoto poused a question for us "comedy vs baseball.which is win?
